Common Loon
This bird has come to represent the Canadian wilderness. Its haunting call across still waters brings back the sense of awe and wonder and evokes many pleasant memories for me. Loons do fluff themselves up when they preen and have such a crisp clean look. This bird has been one of my most popular subjects.

Hooded Merganser
This duck dives for fish, as is evident by its narrow bill. The male, as depicted in this carving, has a round fan shaped crest with a distinctive white patch. Sometimes I have seen them on sheltered back waters or woodland rivers.
Canada Goose
This life sized carving is like having a pet goose in your home. I made another one like it that was sold.

Mute Swan
Swans are a symbol of romance. This male in courtship display is gliding along seeking to impress his partner. It was quite a challenge carving the insides of the wings.

Wood Duck (early work)
This bird is in resting position, and is floating along daydreaming. These ducks make their home in woodlands near a pond, and nest in the hollows of trees.
Wood Duck (standing)
For those of you who haven't seen these birds, it's hard to believe they exist. What marvelous colours they have! Among waterfowl carvers, this bird is a favorite. This carving is of a male, which is far more colourful than the female. I fondly recall watching them in Lost Lagoon. This standing wood duck is technically one of my better pieces, and was a labour of love without shortcuts. I have to admit, I enjoyed taking my time on this one.
